Many local people used the Shell Garage to fill up with petrol. The application to develop the Shell Garage into an urban leisure plaza was opposed by Lib Dem Sam Potts and the Lathbury Parish Meeting who unanimously backed him in opposing this application.

The decision was deferred twice but despite best efforts has now been approved. Sam Potts said: "This is on land that is prone to flooding and a three story building is not in keeping with the open countryside policy. I am very disappointed that common sense did not prevail"
