YOUNG people across Milton Keynes are being urged to make sure they get their names on the electoral register.
Milton Keynes still boasts one of the youngest populations in Europe, but unfortunately, it is well known that younger people are less likely to bother to vote.
Cllr Sam Potts, the Youth Champion for Milton Keynes said: “I got involved in politics at a very early age and today politics means more to young people than ever before – issues such as
the legal age for drinking etc, how safe you are when you go clubbing at night – it’s not just about people sitting in the House of Commons, but about issues that affect you right on your doorstep, especially as young person.
“Young people are eligible to be on the electoral roll from 16 onwards, If you’re not on the electoral roll, not only does that stop you from voting, it stops you from doing a lot of things.
“As in a certain famous phrase, you’ve got to be in it, to win it.”
If you’re name isn’t on the electoral roll you are unlikely to be able to:
• Take out a mobile phone contract
• Do jury service
• Obtain credit
Meanwhile there is still time to register for the elections on 6 May but you must register by 20 April at the latest.
