Liberal Democat run Milton Keynes Council is seeking around 200 older people to receive a free loan computer and web cam to allow them to have face to face contact at any time with family, friends and carers.
The Council is taking part in a European Community funded pilot study over the next 18 months to see whether personal computer technology can be used to aid continued independent living for people over the age of 65.
The idea is that the carer and/or the elderly person can use the computer and have video telephone conversations to provide a ‘constant friend in the house’.
Now the council wants to recruit up to 200 older people to take part along with their carers and family in the project.
The service will create a face to face link to tackle feelings of isolation as well as being a way to offer support and advice on a whole range of issues from healthy living, with diary and reminder services, as well as access to information on clubs and societies.
You will receive technology support and, if you are a carer, counselling support from Carers MK as well.
The telephone calls are made via the internet and do not cost extra.”
Liberal Democrat Cllr Sam Potts, cabinet member responsible for Adult Social Care, said: “I welcome the council’s involvement in this pilot project.
“It is important that we use technology to support carers and families. I am sure it will be reassuring to have a friendly face with words of support and advice. It is similar to having a friend in the home at all times.”
