Milton Keynes Music Service’s String Orchestra has won a national award for their performance at the Music for Youth competition which was held at the Birmingham Symphony Hall last week.
Adjudicators were extremely impressed with their performance of the Holberg Suite by Grieg, giving conductor Euan Forrester a special mention. The award means that the Orchestra will perform at the Music for Youth finals at the Albert Hall in November.
The String Orchestra is the most senior of the strings groups at Milton Keynes Music Centre. Students come from all areas of Milton Keynes and most have been performing with Milton Keynes Music Centre ensembles since they were young beginners on violin, viola and cello.
Cellist, Toby Leonard, age 17 said: “It was a truly inspiring day for all of us; not only a great performance, with some amazing comments, but a huge push forward for our orchestra in order for us to go and do even bigger things.”
Violin player, Camilla Schmid, age 18 added: “Playing in Birmingham Symphony Hall was an amazing experience that will stick by me for ever. It was a great way to finish the year and I will never forget the opportunities I’ve had with Milton Keynes Music Service.”
Milton Keynes Youth Champion Cllr Sam Potts, said: “I am delighted but not surprised that the String Orchestra has won an award the team have worked tirelessly to ensure the orchestra achieves a high standard – and the students have risen to the challenge. They are a credit to Milton Keynes and I hope that they get the opportunity to go through to the final of Music for Youth at the Albert Hall in November”.
