Young people celebrated for helping their communities

Over 150 young people and their parents celebrated young people’s achievements on 10 November at the third Achieve:MK Awards in Milton Keynes. Hosted by Milton Keynes Council’s Children and Young People’s Services, the Milton Keynes Council of Voluntary Organisations (MKCVO) and MK Dons Sport and Education Trust, the awards recognise the contribution made by young people locally to help their communities and improve the lives of other young people.

The winners of the four main awards are:

• Team Participation Award

Awarded to Mary Dee Ferris, Simeon Kearney and Jack Martin for producing a therapeutic piece of art for patients at Willen Hospice to enjoy.

• Young Volunteer Award

Awarded to Jack Martin who regularly runs the café at the Milton Keynes Christian Foundation as a volunteer.

• MK Dons Together Community Champion Award

Awarded to George Gormley for four years of volunteering with projects such as helping with family activities at Greenleys Family Centre, the army cadets and being an active member of the Greenleys and Wolverton Young People’s Group.

• Youth Matters award

Awarded to Emmalee Kilyk for her achievements linked the Every Child Matters outcomes.

Young people from across youth centres in Milton Keynes helped to organise and host the event. There were also performances on the evening from young people showing off talents, including playing the ukulele, rapping and singing.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Sam Potts, Milton Keynes Council’s Youth Champion said: “We are delighted to present these awards with Milton Keynes Council of Voluntary Organisations and MK Dons Sport and Education Trust to highlight the achievements of young people, and hopefully inspire other young people to focus on being good citizens and making a difference in their local communities. We are proud of our young people and the awards recognise the excellent, but often unnoticed, contribution they make to our community.”
