The speed-matching event run on Wednesday 22nd September by Milton Keynes Council’s young people’s advice and support service, Connexions:MK, resulted in every young person, employer and training provider making at least 2 initial matches to take forward.
The event, which was hosted by Connexions:MK in Central Milton Keynes, was set up to link local employers and training providers with young people looking for jobs. Free of charge to everyone taking part, it works in the same way as ‘speed dating’ with a series of 3 minute ‘interviews’. Local young people can learn about the opportunities available whilst employers and training providers can get to know a little about the jobseekers themselves before deciding whether to go on to formal interviews.
Every young person, employer and training provider taking part in the event on Wednesday made at least 2 initial matches to take forward to formal interview, and many participants made between 5 and 12 successful matches.
Councillor Sam Potts, Milton Keynes Council’s Youth Champion said, “Innovative projects such as the Connexions:MK speed-matching event are key to supporting young people through today’s tough economic climate, helping them into work, training and education opportunities in Milton Keynes.”
The young people’s advice and guidance service is part of Milton Keynes Council and works with partners and local organisations to make a dramatic difference to the lives of 13-19 year olds, offering advice and support with a variety of issues including careers, learning, relationships, health and money. A key aim for Connexions is to reduce the number of young people aged 16-18 years not in education, employment or training (NEET).
Young people can talk to a Connexions Personal Adviser at school and college, or by dropping into or calling the Connexions Centre in Milton Keynes:
